Myth of Poleng Cloth

Hi everyone. Talking about supersititions have no end and always be interesting topic especially in Indonesia. Sometimes can be logic but sometimes not.

In our country Indonesia there are many supersititions in every regions in Indonesia. We won't tell it one by one. We just want to share about Myth of Poleng Cloth in Bali.

If you had visited Bali, you could see a lot of Poleng cloth at trees or another place in Bali (such : Pura). And maybe we asked, why Bali people always use Poleng Cloth to cover the trunk of a big tree ?

And the answer is, many people in Bali believe Poleng cloth which was covered in big trees is mean that in that trees there lived "someone" (ghost) who endeavor that place. And Bali people for once in a week or once in few days always give "sesaji" not far from that place/tree. It also have a meaning, many people in Bali believe they gave or put "sesaji" near that place is to respect "someone" in that place.

But there are philosophy behind that, Poleng cloth (Kain Poleng) in Bali culture is expresses perception of Rwa Bhineda concept, it is a concept which explain there is a balance between virtuousness (good) and wickedness (bad) in our life.

Virtousness is illustrated with white color and the wickedness is illustrated with black color.

And another philosophy behind that is, we as a human must be obvious and selective to choose/do bad and good thing.
