DUG-DER-AN Semarang

Dugderan is one of the most famous festivals in Semarang, Indonesia. Dugderan is held to celebrate an upcoming holy-month, Ramadhan. In that month, all of muslims performs fasting. It's a routine festivals which held by Semarang State Government. The words "Dugderan" is
come from this festivals itself. During this festival, there is someone who hit bedug -large drum suspended horizontally at mosque-, and it sound "DUG-DUG-DUG" and also there is someone who fire a cannon, it sound is "DER-DER-DER". So people in early time in the beginning of this festivals called it DUG-DER-AN.

Dugderan have been holding since 1881. The people before 1881 had been confusing to begin perform fasting. Because many people claimed that he/she know "actually" when the beginning of Ramadhan month. It made many different statement and also confusing. It became an attention of the government.

In that time (1881) Semarang which lead by Kanjeng Bupati RMTA Purbaningrat who firstly encouraged to defined the beginning of performing fasting by hit Bedug of Kauman Grand Mosque and fired a cannon at yard of Semarang State Government each one three times.

Nowadays, Dugderan is more joyful. It started with ceremony at Semarang State Goverment's yard after that the ceremony participants and so much people go in procession to the Kauman Grand Mosque on foot. From Semarang State Government to the Kauman Grand Mosque is more less 2 kilometers and one of the writer Aditya Doni has an experience about this (go in procession) when he was Ten grader with X-9 to represent our school.

And, for additional info, there is a special things in this festival. What is it? It is "Warak Ngendok". Warak Ngendok is an (animation) animal which has goat's, body dragon's head and has scales-skin layered with gold (paper with gold color). Warak Ngendok also become Semarang symbol.
